2026 PSA Day Conference:

Disrupting Disconnection: Cultivating Communities of Joy

Schools are spaces of collective resistance and joy; teachers play a pivotal role in creating classrooms that cultivate freedom, belonging, and connection. We are living through harrowing times,  the attacks on schools and our students seem endless.  Our most marginalized students are targeted by far-right groups and their supporters, our schools continue to be chronically underfunded, and our students are feeling isolated spending time alone and online.

Families struggle under a crushing economy and children with diverse needs are given platitudes of inclusion without the fundamental shifts needed to create dignified learning spaces. As Randi Weingarten, President of American Federation of Teachers (AFT), author of “Why Fascists Fear Teachers” writes – “Fascists don’t want to create safe and welcoming schools because they don’t want communities to feel safe or welcome at all – anywhere.”This year at our annual conference, we are calling on folks from all walks of life, who are invested in collective futures to consider how we can disrupt the malaise, the disconnection, and  isolation.

We know that the real antidote to despair is to cultivate communities of joy. Joy in the classroom, in our schools is not frivolous but a necessary component to building the anti-oppressive world we all dream of!
